Since Ethiopia is the source of Arabica coffee and has a distinctive coffee culture, it is regarded as a renowned coffee-producing nation. Ethiopians have been cultivating coffee trees for domestic consumption and commercial sale since the trees were first found growing wild in the country's forests. Coffee is an integral component of Ethiopian culture and a way of life. Ethiopian coffee has 99% more genetic variation than the rest of the globe, making it the most genetically diverse coffee in the world. Because of this, coffee aficionados are very interested in Ethiopian coffee.

Ethiopians consume a lot of coffee, with about half of the country's annual production of 6.5 million bags consumed domestically and the rest exported. Coffee is commonly consumed in a ceremonial setting and is regarded as a regular display of hospitality and society.

The majority of Ethiopian farmers are small-scale and subsistence farmers, with less than one hectare of land on average. While some large estates and co-operative societies exist, the average producer grows little for commercial sale. Coffee is frequently grown in gardens or forests rather than large fields of farmland.

In Ethiopia, coffee is prepared in a variety of ways for market. Privately owned large farms employ hired labour and process the coffee from picking to milling on the property. Small-scale farmers who grow 'garden coffee' bring their cherries to the nearest washing station, where they are sold, blended with other farmers' lots, and processed according to the station's preferences. Co-operative members, on the other hand, bring their cherries to a co-op washing station, where they are weighed and recorded on the co-membership op's roster, providing traceability to the producer level.
